Two overnight house fires kept Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) busy Friday night and early Saturday morning.

WFPS responded to a fire in a vacant, two-storey home at 10:42 p.m. on December 27, 2019.

The fire took place in the 1300 block of Dawson Road South, near the intersection of Lagimodiere Boulevard and Dawson Road South.

Heavy smoke and flame were coming from the home upon crews arrival at the scene. A defensive attack was launched by WFPS to control the flames.

When crews had contained the fire, they transitioned to an offensive attack inside the home to put out the remaining flames.

WFPS declared the fire under control an hour later at 11:42 p.m.

The structure was searched by crews, who found no occupants. No injuries were reported and no damage estimate is currently available.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

At 3:00 a.m. on December 28, less than five hours later, a second fire was reported in a single-family bungalow on Sand Lily Drive near the Royalwood neighbourhood.

All those in the home were evacuated prior to the arrival of WFPS.

Crews saw smoke coming from the house when they arrived and launched an offensive attack inside the home.

At 3:23 a.m., the fire was declared under control. No injuries were reported.

WFPS says preliminary observations suggest careless disposal of smoking materials was the cause of the blaze. It is believed to be accidental.

WFPS reminds residents to always carefully dispose of smoking materials.
