Winnipeg’s largest food bank is in serious need of non-perishable food items.

Winnipeg Harvest director of client services and agencies, Grace Weigelt, says they are in need of a number of items that are a very important part of their client’s food packages.

“We’re looking for a few key items like pasta, rice, peanut butter, canned meats, canned beans and canned fruits and vegetables,” Weigelt said. “We hear feedback from our clients that these foods go a long way when they receive them in their food bank hampers and when we’re short and they’re not getting them, they really feel that in their food budget.”

Weigelt says it’s typical for donations to slow down this time of year. She says donations always pick up during the holiday season but once summer rolls around there is a dip because people have their mind on other things like planning for the end of the school year and planning summer vacations.

“We are always grateful for the support we receive no matter what the time of year is,” Weigelt said. “But hunger doesn’t take a break. We’re serving 64,000 individuals every month in Manitoba and these people rely on these services.”

“We try to keep it in the forefront of people’s minds and anything they can give helps a lot.”

Weigelt says donations can be made by buying those items at a local grocery store and putting them in Winnipeg Harvest bins.

She adds people can also drop off donations at Winnipeg Harvest at 1085 Winnipeg Ave.
