Traffic may be hitting a speed bump in parts of Winnipeg starting next week.

Starting on Monday, construction along four streets will be happening as the City of Winnipeg installs traffic calming measures. The efforts to install speed humps, speed limit signage and other controls will take up to two weeks.

"Greenways are on-street routes designed to serve cyclists and pedestrians safely alongside motor vehicles. They typically include a range of treatments to achieve lower vehicle speeds and volumes ranging from signage, bike signals, and pavement markings to varying degrees of traffic calming. Best practice is to have greenways operate at 30 km/h to both reduce traffic and improve cycling conditions," the city says in a statement.

Areas affected include:

  • Machray Avenue from Fife Street to Main Street (week of July 12)
  • Powers Street from Dufferin Avenue to Partridge Avenue (week of July 12)
  • Eugenie Street from St. Mary’s Road to Youville Street (week of July 19)
  • Warsaw Avenue from Thurso Street to Pembina Highway (week of July 19)

These areas currently have speed limits of 50 km/h, which is 20 km/h faster than recommended for these existing neighbourhood greenways. The new measures are part of a pilot project that began in April, which is seeing how 11 neighbourhoods respond to changes for cyclist and pedestrian safety.
