The City of Winnipeg is seeking its first-ever Kid Mayor.

Mayor Brian Bowman announced the first Kid Mayor program. Winnipeg kids between eight and twelve are encouraged to apply.

“This is a fun, but at the same time educational initiative that I hope will build a greater appreciation for and understanding of municipal government,” said Mayor Brian Bowman in a release.

“As well, it will be a great opportunity for elected members to learn from our kids who can sometimes say the darndest things and are rarely shy about what they think and feel. I hope kids across Winnipeg can find time to share what they think it means to be Mayor, and if given a chance what they would do to make Winnipeg an even greater city.”

Mayor Bowman is hoping to engage more kids in politics so they can learn what it means from a younger age. He also believes politicians can learn something from kids.

To apply, children need to say what they think a Mayor does, and how they would make Winnipeg a better city. Submissions need to be under 250 words and can be made into a video.

The winner will spend a day with Mayor Bowman, cut some ribbons, and hold their own press conference.
