Update: Police are searching for a male suspect after identifying the victim as an Indigenous 14-year-old girl, whose identity is not being released because of the Youth Criminal Justice Act which prevents police from identifying victims of violence who are under the age of 18.

She was with a group when she was attacked and stabbed a block away from police headquarters.

"One of the young people she was with suddenly turned on her and stabbed her," police Chief Danny Smyth said Monday during a news conference.

Officers provided emergency medical care to the victim with the application of a chest seal before an ambulance arrived. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery. She died from her injuries. The suspect(s) fled before police arrived.

The Homicide Unit has assumed the investigation, and no arrest has been made.
