Several West End homes were evacuated Sunday morning as the Winnipeg Police Service investigated a potential bomb threat.

At around 8:40 a.m. yesterday, officers responded to the back lane of the 400 block of Agnes Street, where they confirmed the presence of a suspicious item in a compost receptacle.

The officers treated it as a possible improvised explosive device (IED) and called in the bomb unit.

General Patrol Units, assisted by the Tactical Support Team, Traffic and Auxiliary Cadet Units, secured the scene, evacuated homes and established a safe perimeter before the arrival of the Bomb Unit.

The Bomb Unit executed a controlled detonation of the item, which was found not to contain any explosive materials.

No injuries were reported during this incident.

The Major Crimes Unit has assumed the investigation.
