Groups such as the Winnipeg Jewish Federation and Rady JCC are remembering their ancestor with memorials and sharing facts about the Holocaust.
It is impossible to have an exact count of lives lost during the Holocaust, but it is estimated that over 6 million people perished due to the persecution.
On January 27, 1945, Soviet troops entered the camp, freeing the 60,000 prisoners being kept at the death camp. The United States Holocaust Museum estimates that of the 1.3 million people transported to Auschwitz 1.1 million were murdered at the camp.
