The less fortunate in Winnipeg's downtown area are getting a shave and a haircut this weekend as a biannual event continues.

Haircuts for Homeless is about to come back for the fifth time on May 6, this year in a new location. One88 Church will be this year's host after having the last four at Lighthouse Mission.

Brendalee Reimer is the organizer of the event through her organization, Snippets of Love. A few years ago, Reimer took her hair off for her cousin who had cancer. That sparked an idea for her.

"Haircuts give people their dignity back," Reimer said. "It makes people feel good about themselves."

Reimer recruits hairdressers for the day who volunteer their time cutting people's hair who may not be able to afford it otherwise. She says the experience has been amazing. There are a number of stories, but one stands out to her.

"Andrew," Reimer laughed. "The first time he came in, if he hadn't been wearing a coral-coloured t-shirt, no one would recognize him. We took off all his hair and shaved off a big, bushy beard.

"Next time we came back, he was first in line."

Snippets of Love desires to be the hands and feet of God, which Reimer says is the driving force behind everything she does, including these haircuts.

Haircuts for Homeless happens on Sunday, May 6 at 188 Princess from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Reimer is still in need of three hair stylists and general volunteers for connecting with clients. You can contact her on Facebook.
