Over 2000 students gathered outside for an immersive Indigenous experience.

June 5 was the second year of the Winnipeg School Division (WSD) Celebration Pow Wow at Winnipeg's Tec Voc High School.

Rob Riel, Director of Aboriginal Education and Newcomer Services at the WSD, describes the event as a chance to "celebrate all the things we do with indigenous education in a special and respectful way."

After a grand entry of many dignitaries, principals, and vice-principals from Winnipeg schools, drums filled the air and all dancers were encouraged to dance in their style.

Riel says this pow wow is a time for Winnipeg students to begin to truly understand Indigenous culture. "Many students hear and read about it, but they never experience or see it. This is their chance to see, learn, and share."

Pauline Clarke, Chief Superintendent of WSD, adds this type of education day is "good for both Indigenous and non-indigenous students."

The field of Tec Voc was full of students from all over the city. Riel says, "Every school is represented here today. Last year we had almost 2000, but we have more here today...somewhere between 2000 and 2,500."
