If your child is between the ages of eight and 12, and living in Winnipeg, they could be chosen as Winnipeg's next kid mayor.

“I hope that again this year kids from across Winnipeg can find time to apply," said Mayor Brian Bowman.

"Being Mayor is an incredible responsibility and it carries with it very high expectations, and this initiative helps underscore the importance of the Office of Mayor for both kids and parents in a way that’s not only fun but also educational.”

The initiative was introduced for the first time last year to help foster a greater interest and understanding of municipal government.

Think that your kid has what it takes? Applicants seeking to Winnipeg's next Kid Mayor must submit a 250-word write-up, or make a video, explaining what they think Mayors do and what they would do to help make Winnipeg a better place to live and why.

The winner will accompany current Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman for a full day of being Mayor. This may include an opportunity to pitch to City Councillors his idea on how to improve Winnipeg, cut a ribbon, and host a press conference.

Last year, Kid Mayor Viznytsya had the chance to co-chair an Executive Policy Committee meeting, address media on his ideas to make Winnipeg better, meet with Police Chief Danny Smyth, and officially open a new candy store.

Gabi Wagner was also named as last year's Deputy Kid Mayor for being identified as an incredibly strong runner-up.

Kid Mayor is one of Mayor Bowman's initiatives to help Winnipeg's youth engage more fully in civic government.

Additionally, it was announced by Bowman that applications for the 2019 Mayor's Scholarship for Community Leadership are now being accepted. The award since its inception in 2016 has been recognizing and rewarding the efforts of high school students who are helping make Winnipeg a stronger community.

A new Youth Advisory Council to act as a youth voice and resource to the Mayor is also something to be established later this year.

"There are so many young people in our community committed to making Winnipeg a place we are all proud to call home,” Mayor Bowman shared. “It’s important to allow their voices to be heard at City Hall, and these initiatives help give them different opportunities to be heard and to have input on how their city grows.”
