One Winnipeg man found a new place to try and catch a fish after a large hole opened up in the pavement in his neighbourhood.

A sinkhole that opened up on a St. James street caused quite a stir when a few members of the neighborhood decided to grab their fishing rods and take the new fishing hole for a spin.

Shawn Pageot says his friend Joe McDougall returned home from running errands and stopped by to ask Pageot if he had any fishing rods.

Pageot was confused until McDougall told him a large hole had opened up in the pavement on Ness Avenue.

"We should go fishing!" Pageot recalls McDougall telling him.

"I'm like, 'what, are you kidding?'" Pageot chuckled. "So we just went and set up."

A friend, George Hewitt, came along to take photos of Pageot and McDougall camped out in lawn chairs with fishing rods, apparently waiting for a nibble from the sinkhole.

The sight of seeing two men fishing, rather than construction workers repairing the hole, Pageot laughed, was quite a sight for passing onlookers.

The photos, posted to some online community boards, have already been viewed over 500 times and have gotten more than a few laughs.

When not fishing on Ness, Pageot says he enjoys intercity fishing. "The Assiniboine River up until July when the rivers recede, and then I go for deeper waters."

"This one was a little shallow," Pageot chuckled.
