A student miles away from her family can have a holly jolly Christmas after a neighbourhood banded together to give her some holiday cheer.

While her family lives in northern British Columbia, a university student named Karla needed to stay in Winnipeg during the holiday season. To bring herself some Christmas joy, she bought a Christmas tree before the lockdown began in Manitoba. Due to the quick nature of the purchase, Karla forgot one thing: ornaments.

After learning from her granddaughter that Kayla was unable to decorate her tree, Mona decided to reach out to her neighbourhood group to see if anyone has any ornaments they could spare.

After seeing the post, the community stepped up to donate.

"Our community is very generous that way," she says. "I just went onto the site and asked if anybody was purging any of their ornaments."

Proving the province's "Friendly Manitoba" slogan true, the student was given more ornaments than can fit on a tree by complete strangers.

Karla may have plenty of ornaments, she did not receive the one she was hoping for the most: a tree topper.

"Her dream was hoping to get a lit tree topping star."

Mona says Karla's tree will be fully decorated with lights and ornaments thanks to the community's donations.
