A Winnipeg police officer has tested positive for COVID-19.

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) member reportedly works at the WPS Service Centre where members of the public can report crimes in person, obtain criminal record checks or have non-criminal fingerprinting completed.

The Service Centre is located in the police's downtown Headquarters building at 245 Smith Street.

Police say the affected officer was working in the Service Centre on Friday, Oct. 2 and Saturday, Oct. 3 and again on the morning of Monday, Oct. 5.

Anyone identified through public health investigations as a close contact to the officer will be contacted by public health and given instructions on what they should do next.

WPS says they had previously implemented numerous safety precautuions at station duty. These included installing glass barriers between officers and the public and requiring the use of face masks by all personnel.

Police are encouraging anyone who may be wanting to report a crime or request a criminal record check to do so online.
