For the third year in a row, Manitoba’s finance minister has foregone the traditional purchase of a pair of shoes in anticipation of the release of the provincial budget.

Finance minister Cameron Friesen gifted two pairs of sports shoes to two teenagers, Phoenix and Geras, at Youth for Christ on King Street this morning.

Infrastructure minister Ron Schuler also donated a pair of shoes to the drop-in centre. Last year, Friesen and Legislature members made donations to the Shoebox Project for Shelters, and in 2016 Friesen gave shoes to a young Eritrean girl whose family was new to Winnipeg.

After the presentation, Friesen was asked by reporters about Monday's budget. Friesen says affordability will be one of the issues addressed.

Infrastructure minister Ron Schuler also had a pair of shoes to give.

"Budget 2018 will have some significant things to say about helping Manitobans keep more of their hard-earned money, making good investments, and going down this road (of) a better, more sustainable Manitoba," said Friesen.

Friesen also says the budget will contain information on the framework of Manitoba's carbon pricing system.
