U of M students invited to grow in faith through Power to Change
A student group at the University of Manitoba exists to help students grow closer to Jesus, no matter their faith background. Kevin Huska has been a part of Power to Change (P2C) since 1991, first as a student and now on staff. "I got involved as a student learning how to share my faith. I'm now a staff member and I've been doing that for a number of years, coaching the next generation of students." "As future leaders in government, media, education, and medicine, they're the ones who are going to be leading the country in the years ahead. To be on campus and trusting that as we meet with students, our next Prime Minister will hopefully have heard the Gospel before they actually end up in power," Huska said. He has seen firsthand the impact the organization has had on several students throughout the years. "Often when students come on campus, they are shy. They're trying to navigate the campus. They're unsure where to go or who their friend group can be. As they get involved in the Christian community and learn how to live out their faith on campus, you start to see them thrive in their faith. You start to see them taking steps of faith, trusting God for bigger things." By the time they graduate, he hopes that they will continue serving the Lord. "By the time they graduate, there's been a transformation in their heart and they've been connected with the Lord and they're growing in their faith and they're ready to impact the world." .embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; } President of P2C, Favour Temidayo has been involved with the student group since 2023, "Our focus and our goal is to help students take a closer walk towards Jesus. Wherever they're at, whether they have heard of Jesus, whether they haven't, we want to see how we can partner with them to take that next step towards Jesus." With the new school semester officially underway, University of Manitoba students are invited to the kickoff event this week. "Our kickoff event is our first big event of the school year," Temidayo said. "We're putting posters all over campus and letting people know there's free pizza, time for fun, and it's awesome." The kickoff event holds a special place for Temidayo. "One of my first encounters with P2C was at a kickoff event. I finished class and had nothing to do. I saw an Instagram post that said free BBQ. I was like, 'Okay, sign me up!' I showed up, and people were welcoming. This is awesome what they're doing here, and I want to be part of it." The kickoff event is at 217 University Centre, on Friday, September 12, beginning at 2:30 p.m. and is free to attend for University of Manitoba students. U of M students are invited to spend a weekend fellowshipping at the annual retreat, Summit, which looks a little different this year compared to in the past. "We're going for the entire weekend. Summit has just been a one-day event since I've been a part of P2C or Power to Change, it seems as though it's just continued getting better," Faith Adeyemi, VP of Admin and Women's Event Coordinator, said. "From September 26 to 28, it costs $80, and for first-year students it costs $50," Adeyemi said. "It includes transportation, food, fun, and fellowship. It's going to be just a renewing and refreshing time to really grow closer to the Lord and also be in fellowship with other believers who are in similar stages of life to you." Students will be able to go to Camp Manitou and participate in activities like zip lining and archery. Participants will also be able to get to know fellow students in a weekend away.
