Two dead, nine injured after gunman opens fire at Mormon church in Michigan
Two people are dead and nine others are injured after a gunman attacked a Mormon church in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, during Sunday worship services. Authorities say the suspect, a 40-year-old man from Burton, Michigan, drove a vehicle into the front entrance of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on McCandlish Road, opened fire on congregants, and set the building on fire. Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye confirmed the suspect is one of the dead after being shot in a confrontation with police. Several victims remain in critical condition, and investigators believe more victims may be found once the fire-damaged structure can be safely searched. “We do believe that we will find additional victims once we have that scene secure,” Chief Renye said during an afternoon news briefing. Emergency responders arrived just after noon and quickly began evacuating victims. The fire was contained later in the day. The reunification site for those affected has been set up at the Trillium Theater at Holly and McCandlish Roads. Church officials, leaders respond In a statement released Sunday afternoon, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expressed sorrow over the attack and confirmed that multiple individuals were injured during the shooting. “A tragic act of violence occurred today at a chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan,” said church spokesperson Doug Andersen. “We offer thanks to the emergency responders who are assisting victims and families. … We pray for peace and healing for all involved.” The Church also urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement as the investigation continues. Police: No ongoing threat Police say the shooter acted alone and that there is no continuing threat to public safety. The motivation behind the attack remains unclear. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are now involved in the investigation. Chief Renye added that the crime scene remains active and complex due to the combination of shooting, fire damage and potential additional victims inside the building. A press conference is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. local time at the Grand Blanc Township Police Department. .embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; } Ongoing investigation Police are working to determine a possible motive.
