A Winnipeg man is wanted by MFNPS after fleeing a COVID-19 checkpoint in Long Plain last week.

According to police, on Sept. 28, at approximately 2:25 a.m., MFNPS officers were parked at a COVID-19 checkpoint in Long Plain when a vehicle pulled up beside the police unit.

Police say when officers approached the vehicle a black pellet gun was observed on the front passenger seat. The pellet gun was quickly retrieved by police from the vehicle. The motorist then sped away.

A short pursuit ensued but was called off due to safety concerns.

Officers returned to the checkpoint and confirmed with First Nation security officers the identity of the driver. A 39-year old man from Winnipeg has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, and driving while prohibited.
