The Conservatives are calling for the Commons ethics committee to investigate a multi-million dollar deal between the Government of Canda and a charitable organization that has close ties to the Prime Minister's family.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing heat after not recusing himself from a decision to award a $900 million contract to run a student volunteering program to the organization, which has ties to his family. The deal was later withdrawn, but there's mounting pressure on Trudeau and Liberal cabinet ministers to explain how the sole-sourced deal announced late last month came to be.

WE had previously paid Trudeau's mother, Margaret, about 250-thousand dollars for speaking gigs, his brother Alexandre got 32-thousand dollars and wife Sophie was paid 14-hundred dollars, creating questions regarding how closely tied the Prime Minister is to WE and his ability to award a multi-million dollar contract to WE.

"He said he wasn't personally benefiting from this organization ... but Canadians are finding out that his immediate family members were paid over $300,000 in total by this WE organization," said Tory House Leader Candice Bergen. "So he directly benefited and his family has directly benefited from the organization that he was ready to hand over a billion dollars to."

Trudeau has maintained the non-partisan public service recommended that the WE organization administer the government's student volunteer program. However, he has since apologized for not recusing himself from the government's decision and that his and his family's longtime involvement with the WE charity should have kept him out of the discussions.

"I made a mistake in not recusing myself immediately from the discussions given our family's history," Trudeau says in a press conference. "I am sincerely sorry."

Trudeau says that during the pandemic he has partnered with many organizations focussing on youth, including United Way and Red Cross. He notes that his intention was to give help to struggling Canadians.

"I am particularly sorry because not only has it caused unnecessary controversy and issues, but it also means young people who are facing a difficult time right now... are waiting a little bit longer to serve."

The Tories now believe the situation may have gone beyond ethics and have asked the RCMP to investigate whether any laws have been broken. The MP for Portage-Lisgar said its possible sections of the criminal code which pertain to a prime minister who uses his powers to get a benefit out of an organization related to himself and his family may have been breached.

"This is not the first time the prime minister has done something like this. He was found guilty of breaking ethics laws with the vacation that he took with the Aga Kahn and also with his interference in the SNC-Lavelin affair."

Bergen said Canadians deserve to know if Trudeau's actions have crossed into criminal activity and hopes the RCMP will take a careful look into the scandal.

"I think it's clear that this prime minister doesn't just have problems with judgement. He has problems with his moral compass."

Trudeau states that despite the concern over WE, he is hoping to create more opportunities for both vulnerable Canadians and young Canadians than before the pandemic.
