The members of Transformation Community Church and some of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers need help serving the less fortunate of Winnipeg.

Transformation Community Church (TCC) is going on year number two and are putting together their first official local mission day. Diana Stewart, the mission pastor at TCC, says the church will be going downtown to Salvation Army - Booth Centre to serve food and provide services for the homeless.

But Stewart is looking for professional help. They are wanting to provide hairstylists, barbers, massages, physio, and more to the people in the area.

"We want to be an example of Christ," Stewart said. "We want them to open up their hearts to us, we want to be Jesus' hands."

TCC has been involved with the members of that community through Love Lives Here, but have never run something on their own.

The church already has some big-time help from a few professional football players. Drake Nevis, defensive tackle for the Bombers, will be at the event helping out.

"It's about showing the love of Christ and being a blessing to someone else," Nevis said.

Nevis wants to give back because he had a great support system and wants to help others by being the hands and feet of Christ. He describes his faith as "my everything."

One of the unique things Nevis will be doing is signing Bible's that TCC will hand out to those who come for the services or the food. Each player will sign and include their favourite verse, or one that inspires them. Stewart says that it will make the football players more human and give each person a clear connection.

Nevis is going to use John 10:10, which says "the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."

Stewart is putting the call out for physiotherapists, massage therapists, dentists or dental hygienists, hairstylists, or barbers.

"These people don't have access to this, this is not something that Manitoba Health covers," she pleaded. "This is just a way that we can show our love and give them something that they can't receive otherwise."

The event happens at the Salvation Army - Booth Centre (180 Henry Street) on Saturday, August 18. Services will be running from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering, you can call 204-793-9465 or visit TCC's website at www.tccwpg.com
