The northern Manitoba landscape provides its own challenges in the search for two murder suspects, but so do a large number of abandoned buildings in the area -- one of which has approximately 600 rooms to clear.

The Manitoba RCMP says they have searched over 100 abandoned homes in the town of Gillam so far in hopes of turning up clues about the whereabouts of Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18.

They are also canvassing door-to-door in Gillam, Man., and the nearby Fox Creek Cree Nation, talking with residents to make sure that no tips are missed, and that everyone is safe.

A number of old Manitoba Hydro buildings that are no longer in use are also providing challenges, the RCMP says. The Keewatinohk Converter Station Camp near Gillam is just one example. The large abandoned complex has over 600 rooms, according to an RCMP release.

'Remain vigilant'

"There have been no new sightings of the suspects and no new information that would indicate that the suspects have fled the area," the RCMP says.

Police once again pointed out that they are open to the possibility somebody may have helped the two suspects leave the area without realizing it.

The RCMP says it's important that everyone across the entire country keeps their eyes open for the two suspects.

"It is critical that all Canadians remain vigilant for Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky. If they are spotted, do not approach, call 9-1-1 or your local police immediately."
