Heavy Snowfall in Duluth, Minnesota is providing an opportunity for neighbours to meet and give each other a helping hand.

Last weekend, Winnipeg weather forecasters issued a weather statement saying a Colorado low might hit the city. That low never made it to Winnipeg, instead, it ended up in Duluth, Minnesota.

Jill Mikkelson, an on-air host at Life 97.3, a Christian radio station in Duluth, Minnesota, is blown away by the amount of snow. In fact, it is the most snow the city has seen in years.

"It started Saturday night, and when we woke up on Sunday it was just covered," Mikkelson says.

Duluth and surrounding cities are covered with around 22 - 30 inches of snow.

Plow trucks are working night and day to clear the main roads in the city, however, even a week later some of the roads have not yet been cleared.

"We are all in the same boat and we want to help each other out."

Mikkelson says she and some of her friends are using an app to connect with neighbours so that those who still need help shoveling their way out of their homes can get the help they need.

They are creating something positive out of this storm. "It's a neat opportunity to get to meet your neighbours. It's allowed an opportunity for people to show more kindness. We are all in the same boat and we want to help each other out," Mikkelson says.

Nurses and physicians are resorting to unconventional methods of travel. Due to the snow-covered roads, they are snowshoeing, skiing, and using snowmobiles to get into work.

Mikkelson shares that, she saw people trying to shovel out their cars with the snow as tall as both the car and the people.

Even though there have been many snow days and car troubles, Mikkelson says the community is rallying together and staying positive.

"It really is a winter wonderland," Mikkelson says.
