The Winnipeg Police Service Cops for Kids charity is biking to Arizona, raising money for the Children’s Wish Foundation.

It’s a 3,000 kilometre ride. Coordinator detective Lindsey Stevens says it’s the longest ride he’s been a part of for Cops for Kids. Having taken part in the charity ride before, Stevens says there is a point in every leg when you start to feel the burn.

"We have our Wish child here today. She's going to Disney World in October as a result of what we've fundraised so far, and we're hoping to raise enough money to grant the wishes of other children, and that's what we have in the back of our minds when we're hitting those tough kilometres. And it inspires us to see her here today and give us some power in our legs," says Stevens.

The riders set out this morning. It’s a non-stop relay-style ride to Tucson.

"We're going five and a half days. So it rides throughout the night -- it's non-stop. As soon as we leave the headquarters building here today, we are not stopping. There's always going to be at least one cyclist on the road if not two or three until we reach our destination," says Stevens. He says one group goes 150 kilometres, then the next goes, and so on. Each group -- there are five groups of four -- has a member driving a support vehicle, which is how riders will travel when it's not their leg.

Stevens says it's a biannual event. This is the twelfth ride since Cops for Kids was created 23 years ago. Last year, according to Stevens, they raised about $25,000. As of today, they're just short of $30,000, and they're hoping to surpass that.
