Police received reports of a firearm-related incident after a door-to-door salesperson encountered a less-than-welcoming individual Friday.

A telecommunications services salesperson who had been going door-to-door in the 400 block of Collegiate Street near Ness Avenue encountered what police describe as "an upset male resident" at a house.

Upon encounter, the salesperson tried to leave the scene but was followed by the man to the street where a confrontation between the two took place. Soon after, the man went back inside the home and armed himself with a firearm, says the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS).

At this point, the salesperson fled the scene. He was pursued by the armed man until the salesperson was able to hide inside a residence.

WPS received the call around 8:25 p.m. Friday and officers responded to the scene. Members of general patrol and tactical support, as well as the K9 Unit, attended to the male's house around 8:40 p.m.

Police report that the man was "uncooperative with officers and refused to exit" the home.

It took a few hours before the male was safely taken into custody around 11:20 p.m.

The investigation is continuing and members of the Major Crimes Unit executed a search warrant at the residence where they seized 12 firearms and ammunition.

A 51-year-old male from Winnipeg has been charged with a number of firearms-related offenses and has been detained in custody.
