The AIR1 assisted in the capture of a man who robbed a gas station at gunpoint has been captured by police.

Police responded Friday evening to a report of a commercial robbery on Leila Avenue near Seven Oaks General Hospital where a masked man had robbed a gas station at gunpoint.

Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) General Patrol members responded to the call around 11:10 p.m. with assistance from the WPS K9 Unit and AIR1.

The man fled the scene by vehicle.

Shortly following the incident, a member of the public contacted police after noticing AIR1 and a man "acting suspiciously" in the Templeton-Sinclair area south of where the robbery had taken place.

K9 Unit members tracked the man from the place he had been seen and were able to recover items that had been stolen from the gas station. They continued to track the man to a nearby residence located in the 100 block of Holiday Place.

There, the man was taken into custody.

At this time, WPS is continuing with the investigation and has executed a search warrant at the residence where the suspect was located.
