With the recent heat waves in the southeast, people are reliant on their air conditioning to stay cool.

The general manager at Titanium Mechanical, Stan Hiebert, gives homeowners a tip that can prolong their air conditioning unit life.

"Always make sure that your furnace filter is clean, and also that it's replaced at least once a month."

He says to do the same during heating season.

"Same thing, if you don't replace your filter once a month, you're bound to get a breakdown, and you'll be calling somebody."

Hiebert says the lifespan of an air conditioning unit can change drastically depending on how you take care of it.

"It all depends how you've been servicing it, maintaining it, but anywhere between 10 and 20 years."

The better you treat it, the better it's going to treat you, and proper maintenance includes getting professionals to look at it regularly.

"It should be looked at at least once a year by a trained or professional company."

He says if you do regular maintenance, you're not going to have a huge bill in a situation where you don’t have air conditioning during a heat wave.

Hiebert says that due to the recent intense heat, they are a lot busier than they were even a month ago.

"Right now it's very difficult to serve everybody and a lot of the jobs we are going out two to three weeks right now," he says. "But when it's an air conditioning call, we try and say 'let's try and fit it in this week.'"

Titanium Mechanical has a priority list of who they serve first, it’s not just first come first serve.

Hiebert says they always try to be quick in serving people calling about their air conditioning.

"We've got customers that come in calling that they have a pool pump that's down, well it doesn't matter if you're an existing client or not when an air conditioning customer calls that is still a priority over a pool pump.”

Hiebert notes that because of the support they have been receiving from the community, they want to give back to show their appreciation.

"We are running a special giveaway where we want to give a free air conditioning (unit) to someone who can't afford one. We received many entries, have read through your stories, and we look forward to choosing a winner by Friday."
