Wednesday, October 4 is the Feast of St. Francis on the Christian Calendar. It's a special day not just for humans, but for animals, too.

St. Francis is well known for his compassion for others, especially the poor and sick. However, he not only cared for vulnerable people but for animals as well. Francis is the Patron Saint of Animals, and there are many stories of him passionately preaching to even the birds of the woods.

Francis is known to have considered animals our brothers and sisters through creation and is quoted as saying of animals: “Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission -- to be of service to them wherever they require it.”

Many liturgical churches celebrate Francis' feast day by holding services blessing family pets.

In Winnipeg and area, you can take your pets to St. George’s (321 Pandora Avenue W), October 4 at 7:00 p.m.
