People's interest in God's word has gone up during the pandemic, as one Bible app proves with a record number of downloads.

YouVersion app announced last week that they have now hit 500 million downloads, making it the first faith-based app to reach that amount. YouVersion has been available for download since 2008.

According to one of the app's creators, the hope is to make the Bible accessible for everyone, wherever they are. Right now the Bible app offers over 2,600 Bible versions including translations in 1,760 languages.

"We hear incredible stories from our YouVersion Community about what makes them open the app and how the Bible has transformed their lives," YouVersion Director Brian Russell tells ReligionUnplugged. "Oftentimes they’re looking for help to battle anxiety, break an addiction or save a relationship."

The YouVersion app is a virtual Bible, audiobook, prayer journal, highlighter, Bible study tool, podcast platform, daily devotional and social platform all in one. On the most basic level, it’s possible to highlight, bookmark and make notes on verses, like a physical Bible.

It also offers a community for believers to connect with, adding an online worship aspect.

Creating a place for people to connect had a huge advantage, especially when people were forced to stay inside during the pandemic. In 2019, the app counted that people read or listened to 41 billion chapters of the Bible. In 2020 it grew to 52 billion and even though this year isn't over, the app is sitting at 64 billion chapters read or listened to.

"We are passionate about helping people experience Scripture within the context of community because we recognize it’s one way to help people dive deeper into the Bible and grow closer to God," Russell says. "For example, Plans with Friends allows people to connect in the app with a trusted group of friends to discuss, reflect, encourage, and ask questions about what they’re reading in the Bible."

Next year, YouVersion plans to expand by adding more resources for pastors and church leaders.
