Flooding along North Dakota's I-29 is causing drivers to slow down.

The highway, about 20 kilometers north of Grand Forks, is experiencing overland flooding and remains surrounded by water on both sides.

Flood warnings and advisories remain in effect for areas in North Dakota, including Grand Forks and Fargo, ND.

The flooding comes as a result of some significant snowmelt this year. Overland flooding, according to the U.S. National Weather Service's flood advisory issued for Grand Forks and Eastern North Dakota, has so far been minor.

A flood warning issued today for the same area expects a secondary crest and slow decline in water levels over the next week.

Drivers are advised to proceed with caution in areas affected by overland flooding, never driving across a flooded road due to the dangerous nature of flood waters.

"Turn around don`t drown!"

Over the weekend, Tomislav Milardovich was driving through North Dakota over the weekend to visit a friend who had been admitted for surgery in Fargo.

"Usually when we're driving through North Dakota, Minnesota areas you really just get to see a lot of fields and farmland," Milardovich explained, "driving this time on I-29, about 20 miles north of Grand Forks, ND, on both sides, even through the median area it just looks almost like Lake Winnipeg."

Milardovich says that he's experienced spring flooding before in Winnipeg and southern Manitoba so he wasn't initially too concerned about driving through North Dakota, however he realized quickly the challenges to driving along a flooded highway.

"We're seeing trucks ahead of us... and they're making a big splash, driving kind of slow through that area, that was a little bit concerning when you couldn't see the road for probably about a minute."

In Manitoba, the Red River Floodway was officially activated on Sunday, April 14.

Water levels are not expected to rise above those from 2011, say provincial flood forecasters.

Peak levels are predicted for Emerson over the Easter weekend. Highway #75 heading north of Morris, MB, is expected to remain open.
