A large police presence on Winnipeg's Perimeter Highway and officers surrounding two men in handcuffs caused a stir early Sunday afternoon. However, the RCMP says that two suspects in three B.C. murders have not been taken into custody.

Scott Robinson and Steven Luong were travelling westbound on the South Perimeter when they saw four RCMP vehicles on the side of the highway just past St. Anne's Road.

"There were two gentlemen on the side of the road with the RCMP surrounding them with assault rifles," Robinson says. They say as they continued west they saw another RCMP vehicle and an unmarked vehicle with lights and sirens travelling east towards the scene.

Many others on social media also shared witnessing the incident and speculation that Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, had been arrested ran rampant.

RCMP have not said if the two individuals that were detained on the highway Sunday were taken into custody or released.

RCMP again caution against speculation

"Be assured that the RCMP will communicate with media and the public as quickly as possible if/when the suspects are located," Robert Cyrenne, Director of Communications with the RCMP told CHVN Sunday afternoon.

The RCMP has been asking everyone to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious immediately to police. However, they've also been cautioning against spreading rumours and speculation.

RCMP continue to search for the suspects in the Gillam, Man. area, but also say there is a possibility the two left the area.
