If you need to fill up with gas, today might be the day!

As summer break comes to an end and school begins, expect a large jump in gas prices, especially with the hurricane.

Hurricane Harvey is hitting Texas hard, specifically Houston. This will likely have a ripple effect on our gas prices.

"Potentially 20% of all US gas production is offline," said Dan McTeague, Senior Petroleum Analyst for GasBuddy.com. "Shortages are going to start to appear."

Coupled with the summer coming to an end, McTeague expects the gas prices to jump in Winnipeg.

"Safe bet that, as we head towards the weekend, gas stations will see more activity," McTeague warned. "You're going to see an increase in the Winnipeg market likely pushing us up to and likely well into the $1.05 range."

He doesn't expect it to stop there, saying this is likely not a one shot increase. Because we don't know how long the flood will last in the south, McTeague doesn't expect the price to drop anytime soon.

"As long as [the flood is in effect], I don't see the gas prices situation changing much for the next while," he predicted.

While that is unfortunate for Winnipeg drivers, it's worth noting that drivers have been getting a great deal in Winnipeg. While gas is typically below $0.90, McTeague says most stations are probably paying around $0.93 per litre for it.
