An inmate from Headingley Correctional Centre has died after being injured in an "incident" with corrections officers a week ago.

The Manitoba RCMP says the 45-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries on February 7. Police were called to the correctional centre just before 7 p.m. for reports of an unresponsive male.

He was transported to hospital, and on February 14 he succumbed to his injuries.

Sagkeeng First Nation Chief Derrick Henderson confirms the man, William Walter Ahmo, was a member of the First Nation.

RCMP Major Crime Services has taken carriage of the investigation and is being assisted by RCMP Forensic Identification Services and Headingley RCMP, and continues to investigate.

The nature of the incident is still not clear at this time.
