A Winnipeg Blue Bombers wide receiver says he is thankful and blessed that no one was hurt after he drank and drove.

Late Monday night, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers released a statement, saying Kenny Lawler approached them earlier that day, telling him he had been arrested for driving while under the influence that morning.

"I was dreading walking this locker room having to deal with everything that has happened and transpired, and as soon as I walked in this locker room, man, I was just, you know, I was being hugged on," Lawler says, choking back tears in a Tuesday press conference.

He says his teammates and family have been very supportive.

Lawler apologized for the incident, showing clear remorse and embarrassment.

"I want to take this time to apologize to my coaches, my teammates, the organization, my family, the Bombers community, the fans, to let them know I am truly sorry. For me to go out and disappoint many people, many people that look up to me, this was a mistake. It was a selfish decision, just a bad decision on my part that I knew better not to step in that car. So I'm sorry to everyone out there," Lawler opens a press conference with.

He says when he was arrested, he immediately realized it was a mistake and immature.

"I pride myself on coming in as a matured veteran, and you know something like this happening is not a good look for me, it is not a good look for the team, I am just really sorry for having to put a lot of people through this."

Lawler could not say what he was doing before he was arrested, The player says drinking and driving is not a problem is struggling with, but he did think at the time he could get away with it. The player says he never thought this would be something he would be arrested for, saying he knows others think the same.

"I want everyone out there to be very smart about the decision they make and I am just thankful and blessed that I ain't hurt nobody," Lawler says. "I was raised better; to make better decisions. I remember my dad always talking about 'you need to be a leader, not a follower and I am just thinking about all that."

When his dad reached out, Lawler says his dad told him that he loved him and was here for him.

In the earlier statement from the Bombers, they said they would offer Lawler support, which Lawler says has been amazing. Lawler is not playing on Friday but says when he comes back he will be a better man, father teammate, and player.
