Winter is on the way despite the warm weather in the forecast. Is now the time to change to winter tires?

According to Chris Hudson, the owner and operator of OK Tire Transcona, it's very close.

"We're just getting into that window," Hudson said. "What we're looking for is when temperatures consistently stay below 20°C."

The immediate forecast is showing highs 20°C and higher, but Hudson says that if you've already put your tires on or are about to, it's not a huge concern.

"Winter is coming like it does every year and it's good to stay on top of that."

Hudson highly recommends getting winter tires as the first measure of winterizing your vehicle. They effects are especially noticeable when it comes to braking.

"I hear people saying that with the [winter tires], they are stopping so quick that they have to watch people behind them [to keep them] from sliding into them," Hudson joked.

Hudson also recommends switching your wiper blades, changing your windshield washer fluid to stuff that's rated to -40°C, and putting an emergency kit in the trunk.

The emergency kit can contain a blanket, a folding shovel, a energy bar and more. He also points out that women who wear high heels regularly should put a pair of shoes in the car as well.
