A Winnipeg charity facing a dire financial situation is turning to Winnipeggers in its time of need.

Hands of Hope Hand

Hands of Hope executive director John van Leeuwen says unless they can raise between $25,000 and $30,000 in the next month, they are going to have to lay off some their employees.

"Normally we do get a lot of donations this time of year, but for some reason this year they have been fairly dry," van Leeuwen said. "We're getting to the point where we won't have enough resources to pay our staff, so it's quite a desperate situation."

Hands of Hope is a not-for-profit organization that provides used furniture and household items to families who need them, free of charge.

van Leeuwen says they receive a good deal of funding from the province and through corporate donors, but their next big chunk of money isn't coming through until March.

He says they help approximately six families per day, and if their staff numbers go down, so will the number of people they can help.

"We've got maybe a month of resources left," van Leeuwen said. "In order for us to keep operating and help the people we need to help, we need to get some funds in, so we're just asking the city of Winnipeg to maybe include us in their giving."

van Leeuwen says they also accept donations of furniture and household items, but as of right now they are looking mainly for monetary donations.
