Winnipeg children are gearing up for an event celebrating both sports and reading in February.

The Winnipeg Public Library is putting on a free virtual Winter Sportacular event for kids aged six to 12 on February 12. The online event will host games and trivia for the kids and have readings.

This February hosts both I Love To Read Month and the Winter Olympics. Alix-Rae Stefanko, the head librarian at St. Vital Library, is looking forward to the Olympic-themed event.

"We are so excited to be hosting the Winter Sportacular," Stefanko says. "We definitely encourage siblings to attend the program together."

She says they will be telling attendees how they can design their own flags and Olympic torches after the event.

"We are going to be reading some good stories at this program that are either about sports or have characters who are perhaps taking on a competition or are challenging themselves."

The library has created a specific children's book list that is sports-themed.

The Saturday event can host up to 30 children, so Stefanko recommends registering soon. She says previous virtual children's events were highly successful.
