Trivia, a lunch fundraiser, and more are marking this year's Black History Month celebrations.

Nadia Thompson, the chairperson for Black History Month Manitoba (BHM Manitoba) is excited to celebrate the diversity of what it means to be Black in Winnipeg. To her, the month gives her a chance to brag about, celebrate, and share the history of Black people who come from all over the world.

"Whatever category you put yourself in, this is our month to celebrate us," Thompson says. "We recognize the past, recognize what we have been through as a people, we remember those who sacrificed their lives to give us our freedom of today, and we want to celebrate those who are achieving and making history every day."

BHM Manitoba's events calendar is filled with things like Friday night's virtual trivia about Black inventors, and a fundraiser with Jamaican food sponsored in part by Minister Audrey Gordon, who was born in Jamaica.

Whether Black people come from African countries, the Caribbean, or anywhere else, they are being celebrated in February by Black History Month Manitoba. BHM Manitoba operates all year round, working with organizations like the Manitoba Museum to bring help them Black history to light.

"I hope that the average Winnipegger learns something new. It is just a little concept that makes a huge difference," she says. "It is hard to find hate in something that you are truly invested in."

She says walking in someone else's shoes "makes a huge difference."
