A rare phenomenon has been caught on camera in southeastern Manitoba.

Brent McKean of 501 North Photography captured a few stunning photos of the phenomenon, called Sky-Beams or Light Pillars, in and around Steinbach on Monday evening.

Jordan Carruthers, owner of Manitoba Storm Chasers, says that light pillars are a reflection of light that is caused by ice crystals that are hovering in the air. He says that they're pretty rare, especially around Manitoba and that you need the perfect conditions to get them, they don't happen very often.

"They are perfect hexagonal-shaped ice crystals floating in the air and reflecting the light into an optical illusion in your eyes," Carruthers said. Light PillarsHe goes on to explain that the perfect conditions for them are -20 degrees Celsius and with high humidity in the air.
