The Royal Canadian Legion will be distributing their first poppy Wednesday morning.

The chairman of the Manitoba's Royal Canadian Legion's poppy campaign is set to present Lieutenant Governor Janice Filmon with the season's first poppy.

Comrade Ronn Anderson, the chairman, will do so at the Legislative Building at 10:30 a.m. The symbolic gesture will kick off next week's annual Poppy Campaign.

“It will be my honour to accept and wear the campaign’s first poppy, and I invite all Manitobans to join me in honouring the sacrifices so many have made in defending the values and freedoms we enjoy as Canadians,” Filmon says.

The campaign kicks off on October 30. Canadians are encouraged to begin wearing their poppies on that day. They anticipate over 19 million Canadians will wear a poppy on their left lapels and collars to honour the over 117,000 Canadians who have died serving the country across the world.

“Wearing the poppy demonstrates our understanding of Canada’s national debt of gratitude owed to all veterans."

Royal Canadian Legion branches will be distributing the poppies and placing the funds raised into trust funds. The Poppy and Remembrance Committee of Dominion Command assures that money from the funds is used to improve life for people in the communities where the money is raised.

This year some legion branches are selling poppy masks to raise funds along with poppy donations.
