A Manitoba man's intoxication wasn't the only factor at play when the boat he was helming capsized on the Red River, resulting in the drowning death of a passenger.

Judge Tracey Lord noted the boat that Jesse Berezowski was driving was also overloaded with passengers and the river was littered with debris.

Lord sentenced the 26-year-old to three and a half years in prison.

Berezowski told paramedics he had consumed six beers and "a lot of shots'' prior to the boat capsizing in May 2018.

Brett Oryniak drowned after the boat overturned.
