Taneesha Greaves is donating her "Hero of Everyday Life" grant money to Canadian Feed the Children.

Taneesha Greaves is a recent University of Manitoba graduate, bringing what she has learned about food to help nourish children in northern Manitoba.

"I actually studied nutritional sciences," Greaves says. "I am quite food-focussed."

Originally taking a gap year before medical school, Greaves continued her work with communities in northern Manitoba longer than she expected.

"We want to put a smile onto their faces like they do ours.

I wanted an opportunity to explore different routes."

Since then, she has been working and volunteering with food programs in Gillam and other northern communities.

"When working in a remote area, you are challenged at all times," Greaves explains. "We are able to come into these communities and build relationships."

Greaves works for Sodexo as their Retail Manager at its Keeyask Camp in Gillam, Manitoba. She runs food drives, summer camp activities and sandwich-making teams, feeding 1,700 children in the area.

The work Greaves has done so far was recognized by her company, Sodexo. Greaves was given the "Hero of Everyday" award for her "extraordinary contributions" to her community.

"We want to put a smile onto their faces like they do ours," Greaves says. "We all need to work together to help each other out... it is not just (about) health."

While in northern Manitoba, Greaves noticed the importance of community and building relationships. She says "I love to give back and donate, and volunteer my time."

Working with her new community, Greaves has been focussed on finding ways to feed children things they may need in their own diets. She adds that it has been "challenging and very rewarding."
