The president of the Manitoba Major Soccer League says if a Canadian Premier soccer league gets established it will fill a needed gap in Winnipeg.

The Winnipeg Football Club has been accepted as a member of the Canadian Soccer Association, and is working alongside a group trying to bring a Tier 1 FIFA-sanctioned soccer league to Canada.

MMSL president Lou Guffei says it'll be great for players, because it will give them another target to shoot for. And the MMSL potentially losing players to another league is not a concern for him.

"When it comes to soccer, you should be providing the best possible soccer that you can for the players that are out there. So if we have players that are talented enough to play in the Premier League, we shouldn't be holding them back. So if we lose them, then I say good that they're going to a more advanced league, so to speak."

The MMSL at this point isn't involved in the potential new Premier League, but Guffei says he expects a relationship to form, and the MMSL will do what it can to support the endeavour.

The Winnipeg Football Club hasn't given many details, saying they're in the very early stages of the process. It has said, however, that should the league take shape, Winnipeg's team will play at Investor's Group Field.
