A new youth resource app is being launched tomorrow with the goal of helping youth across the city.

Starting Wednesday, August 23 in the Google Play Store, ResouceConnect will be available to download for free. The app is part of Gain Action Interagency Network's (GAIN) effort to "enhance service alignment, collaboration, and awareness," according to a statement released by GAIN.

The app features a variety of resources, ranging from assistance with basic needs to leisure activities. Volunteer opportunities are also available.

"It's a free directory of over 6,000 Manitoba social services programs and other resources around the province," said Robyn Dryden, GAIN Coordinator. "It is targetted to youth but has resources beyond just the youth focus.

The idea of the app is to help those who are involved in gangs or around gang activity figure out what to do next. There are resources for every teenager though, as well as resources for service providers.

"The [thing] that sets this app aside is that once it's downloaded, you don't need internet or data to access it," said Dryden. She says this makes it easier to access to youth who don't have constant access to the internet, or don't want to use a lot of data.

"My hope is that youth and anyone interested in using it get connected to services," Dryden said. Information on drop-in programs, 24-hour safe spaces, rec programming and more are available on ResourceConnect.

The app will be available on the Google Play store only, for now. Dryden says they are hoping to launch it for iPhone soon, but Android has an 85% market share and they want to reach as many people as possible.

GAIN is a group of about 180 member organizations from government, law enforcement, and community who are working together to fight the gang problem in Winnipeg.
