A Manitoba First Nations Police officer will not face charges after he shot and injured a man who allegedly stabbed him nine times in the head and neck.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba made the ruling into the May 29 shooting.

Police say that the 29-year-old MFNP officer was stabbed multiple times. The officer fired his weapon, and the suspect was wounded.

The unit says the man attacked the officer without warning or provocation and that the officer's decision to shoot the man was reasonable and justified.

The incident happened on the Waywayseecappo First Nation.

The Manitoba RCMP says a 21-year-old man was charged with attempted murder.
