The Amalgamated Transit Union 1505 (ATU) says its drivers are taking more job action on Thursday, June 27, and will not be enforcing fare collection for riders. That includes service to and from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers home opener Thursday evening.

The ATU made the announcement on Wednesday. It's the second time they've asked their drivers not to enforce fares in the last two months.

The Union and City have been in a stalemate over new contract negotiations. Almost 97 per cent of the Union's members voted to reject the most recent offer from the City of Winnipeg.

"We’re taking this step because the City of Winnipeg isn’t listening to our proposals and isn’t showing a willingness to bargain in good faith," ATU President Aleem Chaudhary says.

He says that the City’s push to bring in part-time operators at substantially lower wages, with no pensions or benefits, creating a two-tier system of workers. The Union also claims that Winnipeg has the highest vehicle hours per capita in the country but spends the third least per service hour.

Transit drivers have been working without a contract since January.

The City of Winnipeg has been contacted for a response.
