A 63-year-old male was found deceased in the river after being reported as missing, just after Norway House RCMP arrested a suspect for the murder of Johnny Stanley Muswagon.

Last week, Monday, Manitoba RCMP sent out a news release about the Norway House division receiving a call of a 41-year-old male who was in medical distress in Paupanekis Point. The male from Norway House Cree Nation was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officers consider the death of the male, Johnny Stanley Muswagon, to be a homicide.

The release indicates that Muswagon had attended multiple residences in the Paupanekis Point area on the evening of July 1 and the morning of July 2. After investigation, officers believe it was during this period that Muswagon got into a physical altercation with an unknown person.

In an updated news release from the Manitoba RCMP this morning, it read that "on July 8, 2022, RCMP arrested a 45-year-old male from Norway House Cree Nation in relation to the homicide of Johnny Stanley Muswagon. That male has since been released from custody."

The next day, the Norway House division received another call, this time about a missing person.

On July 9, at approximately 9:45 p.m., a report of a missing 63-year-old male was missing and was last seen leaving a local residence and getting on his boat on the Jack River nearly an hour before the report.

The release says that after a short amount of time, the boat appeared to be floating down the river with no occupants.

The RCMP, with First Nation Safety Officers, the local fire department and residents, searched along the shoreline, conducted a drone search and patrolled the waters on a boat for any signs of the missing man.

According to the release, at 7:00 a.m. on July 10, the remains of the senior were located in the river. Officers believe the man's death is not the result of criminal actions.

Both cases have continuing investigations.
