A Winnipeg man is facing several charges, including Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon after an incident on Saturday afternoon.

The Winnipeg Police Service says that officers on patrol in the area of Ross Ave. and Isabel St. were flagged down by a group of individuals. They told the officers that a man was trying to steal a vehicle.

Police were led to the 200 block of Isabel St. where they found a man inside a car with a screwdriver.

The WPS says that the man refused to leave the vehicle and locked the doors. The owner of the vehicle was able to unlock the doors for officers, who asked the man to exit the vehicle. Police say after continuing refusal for cooperation from the man they attempted to remove the man, who began to fight with them.

Officers used their taser on the man, but say he continued to act aggressively. "During the struggle, the male grabbed hold of the conducted energy weapon and was able to engage the device continuously," the WPS said in a release.

Police allege the device was later pushed into the face of one of the officers where it made contact twice.

Police were able to eventually take the man into custody, and he was transported to hospital where he was treated and released back into police custody. The WPS believe that recent drug use by the man played a role in fuelling the incident.

Both officers had to attend hospital to be treated for injuries they suffered in the struggle.
