For 33 years the family of Candace Derksen has been going through a process seeking justice and healing. Candace's mother, Wilma, says that process is now over.

Candace's accused killer, Mark Edward Grant, was found not guilty of the 1984 murder yesterday afternoon after a retrial of his initial 2011 conviction.

Speaking to press outside the court buildings, Candace's parents say they are moving forward, despite the disappointment.

Wilma said that she hopes the Crown does not appeal the decision, saying "it's been 33 years and this just means it's over for us. The process is over. And in that, there's relief. Of course, there was a bit of disappointment that it didn't arrive at the conclusion that we have personally arrived at," Wilma said. "That's going to be a little hard to come to grips with."

Wilma said that while the system and pursuit of justice will always be imperfect, "we know that our job is to live our lives in truth, as best we can, and enjoy what we've got. Because we've got lots."
