Update: Three people were "seriously attacked by vicious dogs" early Saturday morning, Winnipeg police say.

Reports of a fight in the parking lot of a motel on Pembina Highway at around 12:30 a.m. Saturday turned out to be three people being viciously attacked by pitbull/mastiff crosses.

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) says the dogs "attacked and terrorized numerous people in the motel parking lot."

The dogs then crossed Pembina and left the area.

13 separate WPS units were required for the incident, including General Patrol and two K-9 units. Members of the Tactical Support team were also called.

Members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and City of Winnipeg Animal Services also assisted.

Warnings were sent out on social media by the Winnipeg Police Duty Office to inform members of the public who may be travelling in the Fort Garry area.

The three adults from the initial incident report were injured, and two males sustained severe, life-altering injuries. All three were transported to hospital where the two most seriously injured remain.

Two of the dogs were put down by officers after being located in nearby neighbourhoods. A third dog and a puppy were hit by a vehicle on Pembina and the puppy has been taken for treatment to a local veterinarian.

1 dog still on the loose - police urge caution

The adult dog has yet to be located and residents are cautioned to avoid the dog if spotted and to call 911 for assistance.

WPS says it appears all four dogs were from the same owner.

Police say the owner of the dogs also appears to be one of the victims.

Earlier: A serious dog attack had Winnipeg Police asking members of the public to avoid the area of Bishop Grandin Boulevard and Pembina Highway early Saturday morning.

"Please avoid the 1800 block of Pembina, or if passing through the area please remain in your car; we are investigating/managing a serious attack by several dogs," read a message posted by Staff Sargent Bob Chrismas to the Winnipeg Police Service's twitter around 2:00 a.m. Saturday.

The initial post was followed by two more with updates on the situation.

One tweet requested that members of the public entirely avoid the Bishop Grandin and Pembina area or for drivers to remain in their cars if simply passing through the scene.

Another tweet by Chrismas, posted around 4:00 a.m., announced the area was safe and thanked the public for their assistance in the matter.
