An abducted child and her mother may possibly be in the city, Winnipeg Police say.

Police have requested assistance in locating a missing six-year-old girl, whom they allege was abducted by her mother.

Ayla Velic and her 30-year-old mother, Elmedina Velic reside in Clinton Town, Michigan. The WPS says that the pair is believed to have travelled to Winnipeg earlier this year. However, they may now be in Ontario. 

Elmedina Velic is described as around 5'6" in height and weighing around 160 pounds with dark hair and no glasses. Velic is believed to have been last driving a 2016 Red Nissan Versa with a Michigan licence plate with the number DUE 2506.WPS Missing Persons Unit is investigating this abduction together with U.S. authorities.

A Hague Convention Application has provided WPS with authorization to take Ayla Velic into custody.

Anyone with information pertaining to Ayla or her mother's whereabouts is asked to contact the Missing Person's Unit at 204-986-6250.

At this time, police say there is no evidence to suggest that there need be concern for Ayla's safety.
