A targeted enforcement campaign has netted more than 1,000 charges for driving offenses on gravel roads in Manitoba.

The charges, according to MPI, are for offenses including speeding, impaired driving, failure to use a seatbelt, failing to stop at an intersection, open alcohol, operating an unregistered vehicle, and more.

Last spring, RCMP and MPI launched a dedicated gravel road enforcement and awareness project, funded in part by MPI.

MPI vice-president, business development & communications, Ward Keith says, on average, 14 people are killed and 500 people are injured in crashes on gravel roads in Manitoba each year.

MPI also says it’s expanding its High School Driver Education program curriculum to include gravel road driving skills, both in-class and on the road.
